Homosexual activist's election as chairman reveals Saginaw Democratic Party at odds with county voters, party's own base

59 percent of county voters -- including blacks and union
households -- approved marriage amendment in 2004

SAGINAW, Mich. -- A Midland resident who co-authored Michigan's
Marriage Protection Amendment -- overwhelmingly approved by state and Saginaw County voters in 2004 -- Friday said the Saginaw County Democratic Party's election last week of an openly homosexual activist party chair is further evidence that party officials are at odds not only with county voters but with the party's own base of African-American and union households who strongly supported the amendment.

Gary Glenn, president of the American Family Association of Michigan, said that "by electing
an openly homosexual activist committed to repealing constitutional protection of one-man, one-woman marriage, local Democrats have allowed their party to be taken over by a chairman whose personal agenda is dramatically at odds with the traditional family values strongly shared not only by most voters but by key constituencies within the party itself."

"In solidarity especially with African-American and union households who strongly supported the Marriage Protection Amendment," Glenn said, "we encourage rank-and-file Democrats in Saginaw County to take their party back from homosexual activists such as Garnet Lewis, who will obviously steer the party in a direction not supported by voters of either party."

The Saginaw News last Friday reported the county party's election of former legislative candidate and Central Michigan University administrator Garnet Lewis, but notably failed to disclose to its readers any mention of her self-professed sexual identity, affiliation with state and local homosexual activist groups, or the strong personal offense at voter approval of the Marriage Protection Amendment that she said was the primary motivator of her involvement in county politics. http://www.mlive.com/news/saginaw/index.ssf/2010/03/garnet_lewis_takes_reins_at_sa.html

Coverage of Lewis' election by a homosexual activist newsmagazine in Detroit was more forthright.  Between the Lines reported that Lewis is "an open lesbian (and) advocate for (lesbian-gay-bisexual-transgender) rights" who has served on the boards of both statewide and local homosexual activist lobbying groups. http://www.pridesource.com/article.html?article=40574

Following her loss in a 2008 bid for the state House of Representatives, during which she was endorsed by state and national homosexual activist groups, held a fundraiser at a "gay" bar near Detroit, and benefited from over $300,000 in independent expenditures by a political action committee funded by an openly homosexual billionaire in Kalamazoo, Lewis wrote on a homosexual activist blog, Rainbow Mittens, that her political activism was in direct response to voter approval of the Marriage Protection Amendment.

"I decided to become engaged in local politics on November 5, 2004 at approximately 1:23 a.m.," Lewis wrote. "George Bush had won a second term but, most importantly, Proposal 2 (the Marriage Protection Amendment) passed here in the state. ...(T)he majority of people in this state were saying that my relationship did not matter and should not be legally recognized. It was offensive to me then, and it remains offensive to me now.  After discussing the passage of Proposal 2 with my partner, we both decided to get involved locally in our county political organization. It was that or move to Canada or Germany."

Lewis' stand -- though out of step with the 59 percent of voters who in 2004 approved the amendment both statewide and in Saginaw County -- is nonetheless consistent with state Democratic Party officials' allegiance to homosexual activists' political agenda, Glenn said.

Delegates to the Michigan Democratic Party convention in 2006 approved a platform which stated: "We call for the repeal of 2004 Proposal 2 which adds discrimination to our State Constitution."  http://www.pridesource.com/article.shtml?article=20122

The full text of the amendment states: "To secure and preserve the benefits of marriage for our society and for future generations of children, the union of one man and one woman in marriage shall be the only agreement recognized as a marriage or similar union for any purpose."

African-Americans supported amendment

Glenn pointed to the Marriage Protection Amendment's approval in 2004 by voters in heavily African-American population centers; for example, by 51 percent of the vote in the city of Saginaw, 52 percent in the city limits of Detroit and Flint, 57 percent in Muskegon, and 67 percent in Benton Harbor.

He also cited a Detroit Free Press report the day after the November 2004 general election detailing an exit poll of 2,343 Michigan voters which found that the amendment had been supported by 59 percent of all black voters in the state. ("Gay marriage ban easily wins in state," by Dawson Bell, Detroit Free Press, November 3, 2004)

Union households supported amendment

Glenn also pointed to a Detroit News poll in mid-October 2004 which found that "two-thirds of union households support Proposal 2, identical to the level of support in non-union households," according to a statewide survey of 600 likely voters conducted by Mitchell Research & Communications, Inc. of East Lansing.  ("Same-sex marriage ban likely to pass," by Charlie Cain and Mark Hornbeck, Detroit News Lansing Bureau, October 22, 2004)

Half of all Democrats supported the amendment...and still do

The same Detroit News survey found that 51 percent of Democrats overall were planning to vote in favor of the amendment.  (Detroit News, Oct. 22, 2004)

Five years later, that support hasn't waned, according to a September 2009 poll by Lansing
Democratic political consultant Mark Grebner which found that half of all Democrats said they would vote against a ballot measure attempting to repeal the amendment. http://www.michiganliberal.com/diary/15250/repealling-michigans-prohibition-on-gay-marriage

Remarkably, Glenn said, the Grebner poll suggests that supporters of the Marriage Protection Amendment would have "a reasonable shot at defeating any ballot campaign to repeal the amendment even if Democrats were the only ones allowed to vote."

Add in the 58 percent of independents and 91 percent of Republicans who said they too would vote against repeal of the amendment, according to Grebner, and such an election "wouldn't even be close," Glenn said.

"That's why electing a chairman whose primary motivation is her personal agenda of promoting so-called homosexual 'marriage' is so curious, unless they're in the business of helping the opposition, since it likely offends half the Democrats and will further alienate independents and Republicans from Democratic candidates," Glenn said.

"Politically, it might have been better for Saginaw County Democrats if Chairman Lewis had moved to Canada or Germany instead, as she threatened," he said.

He noted that in 2004, rank-and-file Michigan Republicans in state convention overwhelmingly adopted a resolution endorsing the Marriage Protection Amendment, by a vote of 1,259 to 40.

Leaders Fiddle While the Nation Burns

The United States hit a new record this month—more public debt piled up than any month before in the history of the nation. Unapologetic, Congress bought five luxury private jets for a brand new Congressional fleet because they didn't feel that military jets were good enough for their junkets or their refined tastes.

Where did the money come from? The nation borrowed it from foreign creditors and secured the debt with our earnings and the future earnings of our children and grandchildren.

The FairTax ends the corruption practiced daily by tax writing committees who treat $2.5 trillion a year in tax receipts as their private property. It bars lobby deals and special favors and shifts power from the government to the citizen. It restores the role of the American people in deciding how much and when taxes are paid by their consumption decisions and it creates a new era of robust American economic growth.

But as good as the FairTax is for the nation, it is still ignored, at best, and distorted and despised, at worst, by those in the political elite who profit from corruption of the federal tax code. This week your FairTax organization delivered nearly 100,000 petitions to the House Ways and Means Committee--who could not be bothered to meet with national FairTax campaign chairman, Ken Hoagland.

"I am furious that the leading alternative to the income tax has again been ignored along with every American who petitioned their government for redress of grievances," said Hoagland. "This betrayal of the voice of the American people adds fuel to the fire of our determination to break through the wholly unacceptable and un-American shell of disdain for the common man that we are seeing from Washington, D.C."

FairTax News

They just don't get it in Washington.

Washington AP
by Liz Sidoti

There's a gaping disconnect between what Americans care about and what President Barack Obama and Congress, Democrats and Republicans are actually doing. A new Associated Press- poll tells the story: contempt for lawmakers, a bare majority approving what Obama's doing. Or just listen to Robert Watson.

He backed Obama in 2008. He lost his job at a direct mail company in the Great Recession. And he's been looking for work ever since. Neither Obama nor Congress, Watson says, is addressing what really matters: "I'm still unemployed."

"There's nobody doing any hiring," he says. And when they are, "100 people are going for the same job." He wants Obama to focus more on creating jobs, Congress to stop the partisan games and both to remember who sent them to Washington.

"They just can't seem to agree on what's important for this country," laments Watson, 59, of Annapolis, Md. "It's just a mess."

Now look at Washington.

The White House and Congress are consumed with the partisan gridlock on overhauling health care. That issue is overshadowing everything else_ even legislation in the House and Senate to provide unemployment relief.

Congress Spends Half a Billion on New Jet Fleet

Wall Street Journal
By Brody Mullins

WASHINGTON -- Congress plans to spend $550 million to buy eight jets, a substantial upgrade to the fleet used by federal officials at a time when lawmakers have criticized the use of corporate jets by companies receiving taxpayer funds.

The purchases will help accommodate growing travel demand by congressional officials. The planes augment a fleet of about two dozen passenger jets maintained by the Air Force for lawmakers, administration officials and military chiefs to fly on government trips in the U.S. and abroad.

The congressional shopping list goes beyond what the Air Force had initially requested as part of its annual appropriations. The Pentagon sought to buy one Gulfstream V and one business-class equivalent of a Boeing 737 to replace aging planes. The Defense Department also asked to buy two additional 737s that were being leased.

Lawmakers in the House last week added funds to buy those planes, and plus funds to buy an additional two 737s and two Gulfstream V planes. The purchases must still be approved by the Senate. The Air Force version of the Gulfstream V each costs $66 million, according to the Department of Defense, and the 737s cost about $70 million. Geoff Morrell, the Pentagon press secretary, said the Department of Defense didn't request the additional planes and doesn't need them. "We ask for what we need and only what we need," he told reporters Wednesday. "We've always frowned upon earmarks and additives that are above and beyond what we ask for."

Record budget deficit
By United Press International

WASHINGTON, March 11 (UPI) -- The U.S. government in February spent $211 billion more than it took in, setting a record budget deficit for a month.

The U.S. Treasury released data Wednesday saying figures from last month indicate the federal government will probably pass the annual deficit record of $1.4 trillion set in the last fiscal year.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner told a House of Representatives subcommittee the deficit spending is aiding economic recovery efforts but also is "unsustainably high."

The current fiscal year is five months old and the government is showing a budget deficit of $651.6 billion, nearly $53 billion more than the same fiscal 2009 time period.

We Shall Never Surrender. We Shall Never Yield~eburke from RedState.com

Hi: I found this on RedState and though it might encourage those of you who are feeling tired....

We Shall Never Surrender. We Shall Never Yield. By eburke from RedState.com

It's been a long week. Actually, it's been a long 14 months.

For the last year, those of us who love this grand experiment called America have seen assault after assault waged against our liberties, our freedoms and our Constitution. And sometime in the next 72 hours, we will know whether those who wish to impose their vision of an America where freedoms and liberties give way to the all-knowing, all-controlling state from which our Founders freed us, will be able to strike a massive blow against the America we love.

If there was ever any doubt that these forces of tyranny would engage in lies, deceit, subterfuge, theft, bribery and a host of other nefarious schemes, the actions in the past months of the Obama-Pelosi-Reid cabal have put those doubts to rest. And today? The Democratic-controlled House of Representatives shredded the Constitution and paved the way for the rule of men rather than the rule of law.

It's been a long and exhausting fight, and as I perused comments and diaries this afternoon, it became evident that many who have manned the ramparts and filled the breaches with every ounce of vigor and strength within their being are exhausted, tired, and weary of the battle. I understand that weariness; I understand the aching knot in the pit of your stomach; I understand the sense of inevitability that invades your soul. I understand those things because I have experienced them all.

But to my RedState brothers and sisters who have fought so valiantly, I implore you to not despair…do not give up the fight…this is not and will not be over until it is over. And that time has not yet come.

Fellow lovers of freedom, we must not, we dare not, at this moment that our country needs us the most, allow our fears to overcome us.

This is not the view of a naive Pollyanna.  I do not believe that there is no way we lose this fight because we all know that the forces arrayed against have no morals and could give a rat's hind end about the rule of law in their zeal to impose socialism and tyranny on us.

But the fact remains that they're the ones running uphill not us. They are the masters of lies, subterfuge, misdirection, bribery and fraud. They. Have. No. Morals. But I believe in my heart  that they still have a mountain to climb, and a raging torrent of a river to cross. I believe in my heart that they know they need to get this to one of two votes so they can pull out the "do you really want to be the vote that kills this?" card.

But I do not believe that it is, at this moment, close enough for them to pull that card. I believe that to even get it that close, they need to create an aura of inevitability; to isolate the opposition; to get the first 7 or 8 to cave so they can then get the last 2 or 3. And I believe that that is what all of this "fauxmomentum" of the last few days is all about.

I firmly believe that a lot of the yes's from November's vote purposely moved to 'undecided' for the express purpose of declaring 'for' the bill in the last days in order to create an illusion of 'undecideds breaking for the bill' which the sycophants in the MSM will then trumpet. Because I believe that, it has been frustrating to watch people who rightly and daily rail on the MSM for their sycophantic lying and total lack of objectivity get sucked into the vortex of that which they know to be filled with filth and lies because their hearts are so filled with fear and dread.

Many have asked how it could be possible for us to lose the vote on the Slaughter Solution today and still win the battle. I never said or thought this would be easy, but folks, that was a procedural vote. No matter what one's vote on a particular piece of legislation, legislators are expected to support the party line on procedural votes. To not do so is to invite the wrath of the party leadership upon your head, and doesn't do much for your standing within the caucus either.

Folks, the wonder of the vote today isn't that we "lost" it; it's that 28 Democrats broke with their leadership on a procedural vote. That's virtually unheard of. I went back and cross-checked lists and at least nine of the Democrats that voted for the SS (that would be the Slaughter Solution :-) voted 'no' in November and announced in the last 48 hours that they were firmly against the bill.

On the other hand, Lipinski (who recently announced a switch from yes to no who I personally thought was an awfully squishy no) voted against the SS as did Harry Mitchell from Arizona (who also voted 'yes' in November) Could that be a covering vote to 'mitigate' a vote for the Rule itself? Maybe. But I don't think so.

All I know is that the whip counts I follow show there are 36 firm no's; only two no's from the November vote (Kucinich & Gordon) have announced as a 'yes'. But there are 10 yes's from November that have flipped to 'no'. There are nine no's from the November vote listed as undecided. Within the 'undecideds' are "yes's" that are part of the Stupak dozen who Stupak says are standing firm. Stupak continues to claim that there are Congressmen on his list that aren't on anyone else's, and people who are thought to be part of his coalition who are not. And he continues to maintain that the 12 he has are all holding firm. Folks - the Dems have to run the table on virtually all them because they can only afford to lose two of these people to garner the votes to pass this. And you wonder why The One has postponed until June his trip to Indonesia, and the Democrat leadership is now starting to court Joseph Cao (R) from Louisiana?

Can they do it? Of course they can. Will they? I wish I knew. But if they do, let it not be because our side got dispirited and pulled back at the most critical moment in the battle when every ounce of courage and strength need to be thrown into the breach. From the bottom of my heart and from the depths of the knot in my stomach I believe that is what this whole last couple of days has been about - creating the appearance of momentum so that wavering Dems will cave and opponents will give up.

Am I underestimating the lengths and depths that these enemies of freedom will go to enact the Holy Grail of socialism for which they have schemed and plotted for 70 years? Absolutely not. Do I understand that the stakes have never been higher; that the carrot of pork and the stick of broken body parts will be tough to overcome. You bet Nancy Pelosi's botox-injected bottom I do.

I'm just saying "Screw 'em!" If we lose this, then let's lose kicking and screaming and punching and gouging right up until they close the vote on Sunday. Let us not get so caught up in their lies, deceit and utter lack of scruples that we become discouraged and give up the fight before the final blow has been stuck.

In the paraphrased words of Winston Churchill:

Churchill

{Let us} not flag nor fail. We shall go on to the end. We shall fight…on the seas and oceans; we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength… We shall defend our [country] whatever the cost may be; we shall fight on beaches, landing grounds, in fields, in streets and on the hills. We shall never surrender!

If, at this moment of peril for our great country, we do, we will never forgive ourselves
